Your Guide to a Healthy Summer

Your Guide to a Healthy Summer

Summer is finally here, and it’s time to soak up some much-needed sunshine. However, warmer weather and intense sunlight can pose health risks, especially for older adults and other vulnerable individuals. Here are essential tips for staying healthy this summer season:

1. Hydration: Drink water throughout the day, even when you’re not thirsty, to avoid dehydration, which can cause headaches and other serious health problems. Adequate hydration also helps replenish fluids lost through sweating in hot weather, so keep a water bottle handy at all times. Additionally, try to consume hydrating foods such as watermelon, oranges, cucumber, and leafy green vegetables during this period.

2. Protect Your Skin and Eyes: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers both UVA/UVB protection and has an SPF of at least 30 before going out. Stay in the shade when the sun is intense, and wear suitable clothing such as a long-sleeved top, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses for protection from sunburn, eye damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

3. Exercise Safely: Choose moderate-intensity physical activities such as yoga, swimming, or walking. Schedule your activities for times when the heat is less intense, listen to your body, and rehydrate frequently.

4. Socialising: When reconnecting with friends, try not to overcommit to too many parties and events. Also, focus on nutrient-dense foods like fruits and vegetables, and limit sugary treats such as ice cream when you're out in the heat.
